Growing Hemp Biomass, Hemp Seeds and Hemp Seedlings in South Carolina

The South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) is administered the South Carolina Hemp Farming Program.

Hemp is a variety of the plant Cannabis sativa that is low in the chemical THC. Here’s the definition under South Carolina state law: ‘Hemp’ or ‘industrial hemp’ means the plant Cannabis sativa L. and any part of that plant, including the non-sterilized seeds thereof and all derivatives, extracts, cannabinoids, isomers, acids, salts, and salts of isomers, whether growing or not, with the federally defined THC level for hemp.

Anyone interested in potentially growing, processing, or handling hemp in South Carolina may view the 2020 South Carolina Farmer Orientation Presentation (PDF) to get a full overview of the program. This orientation is also a component of the Grower application process itself and a requirement for permitting.

2022 Hemp Farming Permit

SCDA will accept 2022 farming applications online only. An applicant must complete all parts of the application process (including obtaining a background check and FSA number) by the Feb. 28, 2022 deadline or SCDA will not process the application.
